About Me
I am a mother of two girls living in the Denver-metro area. I was born and raised in Aurora, Colorado.
My father is a chemist and has run his own water-purification business for 30 years. I grew up with test tubes, beakers, weird smelling chemicals and bunson burners. It was not unusual for my dad to have acid burns on his skin and clothing. When I think of my dad, a strong memory of chlorine and white stains comes to mind.
My mom is a teacher. She has taught first grade and pre-kindergarten. Growing up, my mom always found ways to teach my brother and I at all times and locations. We spent many an afternoon at museums, the zoo and in the Colorado mountains. I grew up with a strong sense of learning and finding the lesson in everything I do.
I began my college career in the pre-med program, but soon switched out, realizing I couldn’t handle dissection. Or blood. Or anything dead. Career killer. I instead turned to geek-ville with gadgets and technology being my focus. I worked for an audio company for 4 years before switching over to local news coverage. I worked almost every technical position possible at KUSA-TV Denver before switching over to helping create and develop the fledgling 9News.com. While I was on the webteam, we went from 100,000 page views a month to well over 3 million.
Now that my two daughters are in school and interested in everything, I have enjoyed bringing science into their lives at home as well as bringing into both of their classrooms. I love the WOW factor that science offers, and the ability to show that science doesn’t have to be boring. I have so many science activities in my house, one of my daughter’s friends comes over just to “do science” That makes it all worth it.
We also spend time sneaking in history lessons, time-telling, social studies and the like. I love my local elementary school, but public schools are so strained teaching for tests that many essential study areas are being dropped. I am not a professional teacher, nor do I play one on TV, but I love teaching my girls and expanding their horizons.
I am writing this blog as a forum to share ideas with moms from all different backgrounds – homeschoolers, school-volunteers, party planners, playful parents and anyone else who enjoys science, technology and exciting kids about learning.
I enjoy finding the lessons during playtime, the science in the activity and the learning in life.
